Mental health is one of the biggest, yet least discussed, health crises affecting men in the UK. Suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50, and men account for 74% of all UK suicides. These numbers aren’t just statistics, they’re the outcome of deep-rooted societal issues.

So why aren’t men talking?

It starts young. From childhood, many boys are told to “toughen up”, not cry, and “be a man”. These outdated ideas of masculinity discourage emotional openness and create a culture where vulnerability is viewed as weakness. The result? Men are far less likely to talk about feelings or seek support.

In a 2023 YouGov survey, 40% of UK men said they had never spoken to anyone about their mental health. Even among those struggling with anxiety or depression, many continue to suffer in silence.

This silence is deadly.

Not recognising or acknowledging emotional struggles can lead to substance abuse, relationship breakdowns, job loss, and in too many cases, suicide. And when men do seek help, they often feel out of place or unsupported in services that may not feel male-friendly.

The tide is beginning to turn. Campaigns like CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), Movember, and Mental Health UK are working to break the stigma and promote conversations. Some workplaces are also starting to recognise mental wellbeing as a priority, with mental health days and access to confidential support.

But we need more than awareness, we need action. That includes mental health education in schools, more male-focused support services, and a cultural shift that redefines strength to include asking for help.

Talking isn’t weakness. It’s strength. And it might just save a life.
