Why Are Men in the UK So Unhealthy? The Hidden Health Crisis
Posted on 7th April 2025 at 16:13
When it comes to health outcomes, men in the UK are at a serious disadvantage. On average, men die four years earlier than women. They're also more likely to die from preventable illnesses such as heart disease, liver disease, and certain cancers. But what's really behind these alarming statistics?
First, let’s look at the numbers. According to the Office for National Statistics, the average life expectancy for men in the UK is currently around 79 years, compared to 83 for women. Men are more likely to die from diseases that are heavily influenced by lifestyle, such as cardiovascular disease and liver cirrhosis. They also represent the majority of those who die by suicide, a clear sign of deeper mental health issues.
So what are the root causes?
Lifestyle is a major factor. Men in the UK are more likely than women to drink excessively, smoke, eat poorly, and avoid physical activity. These behaviours often start young and go unchecked for years. But lifestyle choices don’t exist in a vacuum, they’re deeply connected to societal expectations.
Traditional ideas of masculinity still dominate. Many men grow up believing that asking for help is a sign of weakness, or that talking about emotions is unmanly. This cultural script discourages men from engaging with healthcare services until problems become severe.
A 2022 study by Men’s Health Forum found that 33% of men would avoid seeing a doctor even when experiencing worrying symptoms. This delay often results in late diagnoses and poorer outcomes.
Moreover, the healthcare system is not always tailored to engage men. Few GP surgeries offer male-targeted health education or outreach. There are some positive steps being made, such as the NHS Health Check for those over 40—but more proactive efforts are needed.
In this series, we’ll unpack the complex web of issues that contribute to poor male health in the UK. From mental health and masculinity to lifestyle and lack of preventive care, we’ll explore the barriers and offer insights into what can change.
Men's health is not just a personal issue, it’s a public one. Families, workplaces, and communities all suffer when men are not well. It's time we start talking about it and, more importantly, start doing something about it.
